Be Social Member Joyce Minault is a Community Support Supervisor for AHRC NYC, helping adults with disabilities lead independent lives, and build communities. After taking an intro to disability studies class as an undergraduate student, Joyce was inspired to make an impact, and work for the AHRC college program. Now seven years later, Joyce reminisces on her love for her job, “I often feel like people are missing out. Because I love going to work. I love the people I get to spend time with…it’s the same as dealing with any other person you find. You make your boundaries, you find what works in every relationship. And that’s just the way it is in any work relationship or any personal relationship. And it’s no different when you’re engaging with somebody who has a disability.” Through her work, Joyce has seen her clients lead fulfilling lives, being able to travel independently, own homes and connect with others.

A few years ago, Joyce’s agency signed her up for Be Social Change events but after her first “Finding Your Purpose” event, she was hooked. She wasn’t quite looking for a career change but rather wanted to soak up new information and topics. Directly, Be Social Change has helped her understand her impact and be a better supervisor. She remarked, “it was always hard to describe to people what I’m doing. I do paperwork. I help people go out into the community, but it was actually the personal branding workshop where [Marcos] has this formula where you say your name, your title, and then your community you serve, and then how you do it…When we had to do that, that practice sort of clicked.” Through numerous events, including a training for new managers, a panel on impact investing, and a conversation about cleaner energy, Joyce has picked up new habits and practices that have shaped her life.
