Thank you to everyone who came out on Monday for an in-depth conversation about crowdfunding. A special thanks to Meetup for letting us use their space. Meetup is the world’s largest network of local groups, making it easy for anyone to organize a local group or find one the thousands already meetup up face-to-face.

Our panelists opened up about their successes and failures in their own crowdfunding campaigns and provided insightful lessons learned for future campaigns! Here are a few takeaways from the event:

Panelists
Marcos Salazar, Co-Founder of Be Social Change, @BeSocialChange, Campaign Page
Mika Bulmash, Founder of Wine for the World, @Wine4theWorld, Campaign Page
Melissa Seligmann, VP of Business Development at Uncharted Play, @SOCCKET
Alison Dalton, VP of Operations at Uncharted Play, @SOCCKET
Bob Bland, Founder of Manufacture NY, @ManufactureNY
Angela Bullock, Co-Founder of 100cameras, @100cameras

Facilitator:
Su Sanni, Co-Founder of WeDidIt!

Motivations:
The panelists had a wide variety of reasons for why their organizations launched a crowdfunding campaign. 100cameras for example, was at a pivotal point in their organization and saw a campaign as bridge to scaling out their impact. Other organizations saw a crowdfunding campaign as a useful tool to test the market, confirm proof of concept and gain valuable marketing and PR for new initiatives.

Choosing a Platform:
Each platform offers different benefits, so choosing a platform for your crowdfunding campaign is an important step. 100cameras appreciated the mentorships, advice and support they received from WeDidIt. Alternatively, Uncharted Play found Kickstarter to play a more hands-off role, however was more beneficial since they are a for-profit company. Both WeDidIt and Kickstarter are based on an all or nothing model, which provided a sense of urgency that could be leveraged using social media for 100cameras and Uncharted Play’s campaign. Manufacture NYC, Wine for the World and Be Social Change used Indiegogo, a platform that had advantages for non-profits and the second highest reach after Kickstarter. Also keep in mind that each platform takes a different percentage of your total funds raised, so do your research ahead of time!

Challenges:
There were, of course, many unexpected challenges for all of the panelists. In particular, organizations that were selling services rather than products found it harder to convert clicks to donations, perhaps because people are less likely to donate to an idea than a tangible product. Marcos talked about how Be Social Change tried to circumvent this challenge by productizing their perks, providing t-shirts, temporary tattoos and prints. However for organizations like Uncharted Play, they found that providing soccer balls as a lower-level perk and an exclusive experience as a high-level perk was the optimal combination of perks.

The Emotions
Running a crowdfunding campaign can be a bit of an emotional roller-coaster. The best approach is to keep your expectations low, remember that there are inevitable lull’s and keep in mind that it’s a marathon and not a sprint!

Top Tips:

Plan ahead! All panelists agreed that they wish they had planned their strategy months in advance. Make sure to develop how you want to use your network before you go live.

Make a list of types of people/influencers you want to reach out to with an ask of “help spread the word.” Just appearing in someone’s feed may get you a lot of exposure. It’s important to keep incentives for these ‘ambassadors’ simple and instill a sense of ownership of the campaign.

Context is important: understand your demographic and reach them through niche press. Although Uncharted Play had celebrity endorsements such as Bill Gates, Ashton Kutcher, Elijah Wood and Stephen Colbert, they received more pledges from Uncrate and Treehugger, media sources that directly catered to their demographic.

Remember to tailor your message to a relevant audience. For example, UnchartedPlay wrote tweet templates for NY based startups: “Have you heard of the new kids in town?” or “We’re Made in NYC too”.

Prepare fliers for all of the events that you will be at during your campaign, maybe get a pack of business cards from moo.com that have your campaign on the back to specifically use during the campaign.

Be aggressive with your ask. 100cameras emphasized the importance of continued and direct asks for donations. While this can be uncomfortable to do, it really does make a difference when reaching your goal.

Reinvigorate excitement about your campaign through in-person fundraising events or new perks.

Whether you were out celebrating Cinco De Mayo, riding in the 5 Boro Bike Tour (May is Bike Month in NYC!), or walking around your favorite neighborhoods. These sunny days are definitely getting us excited for summer!
